Redi-Chlor Water Disinfection Tablets

About Redi Chlor

Redi Chlor tablets are comprised of dry chlorine that is both E.P.A. (Environmental Protection Agency) registered for use in disinfecting drinking water.  Chlorine is the method of choice for drinking water disinfection by 98% + of the municipalities and rural water districts here in the U.S. Redi Chlor tablets come in 2 sizes.

The 1/10 gram tablet is designed to disinfect 2 gallons of water per tablet.  The tablets are double scored to enable the user to split the tablets, to disinfect smaller quantities of water.  By quartering a tablet, and then halving one of the quarters, one can disinfect 1 quart or 1 liter of water.  Each box of Redi Chlor tablets consists of 50 tablets (5 blister packets containing 10 tablets each).  This is enough tablets to disinfect as much as 100 gallons of most water.

The other tablet is a 1/4 gram tablet that is designed to disinfect 5 gallons of water.  The 1/4 gram tablet also comes packaged in boxes of 50 tablets, consisting of 5 - 10 count blister packs.  This will be enough tablets to disinfect as much as 250 gallons of most water.  This tablet is especially convenient for those who gather and store water in 5 gallon or larger containers.  In many areas of the world, people use 5 gallon buckets to gather and store their drinking water supplies.  Whether you use the 1/10 or 1/4 gram tablets, the recommended dosage as listed on the enclosed dosage chart is for a total chlorine dose of 9 ppm (parts per million) total available chlorine to the prescribed quantity of water.

Free chlorine, the amount of residual chlorine remaining after chlorine demand has been met, is what
is necessary  to adequately disinfect water
of bacteria and virus.   According to World Health organization statistics, ten million plus people die every year throughout the world from drinking biologically contaminated water.  It is CTI's hopes, that with the
availability of our Redi Chlor tablets, this carnage can be greatly reduced.

Packaging

CTI has done extensive research and development to come up with our current packaging.  We felt like it was
extremely important to develop a packaging that was light weight, effective, economical, and user friendly.  By
packaging these tablets in 5 - 10 count blister cards, every tablet is in its own airtight compartment.

We have used the latest state of the art packaging materials that are the best available at insuring the longest shelf life possible. The blisters are perforated to enable the user to easily tear off one tablet at a time, without interfering with the airtight integrity of the remaining tablets.  Each tear off portion of the blister card is equipped with a peel and push
tab so the child resistant backer can be peeled away to enable the user to push the tablet through the foil backer and remove it easily from the blister.  The size of the outer box is approximately 4"X3 1/2"X5/8" and the weight for the 50 count  tablets and box is slightly over 1
ounce.  The light weight will help hold down shipping costs and the small size will make the tablets very portable.  Each box will include labeling and instructions for use, in the form of a leaflet inside the box.  The boxes will be packaged in 100 count overpack boxes.  The individual boxes will be attractive and have a hang tag on the top of the box, so they can be hung up for display.

Labeling

Redi Chlor tablets are labeled in accordance with EPA labeling requirements.  As the label is quite lengthy, it
required us to put the entire label and usage instructions on a leaflet and it is inside the box, with the 5 - 10 count blister cards of tablets.  Minimum labeling is on the outside of the box.

Directions for Use

Redi Chlor tablets will be either 1/10 gram tablets, designed to treat 2 gallons of water or 1/4 gram tablets,
designed to treat 5 gallons of water.  The tablets will be packaged in 10 count (2 rows of 5 tablets) blister cards.
Each tablet is perforated on 3 sides, to enable the user to easily tear a tablet off the card, without compromising the airtight integrity of the remainder of the tablets.  The easiest way to remove a tablet is to fold the blister along the perforation and then simply tear off a tablet or tablets as desired. Once the individual blister and tablet is separated from the remaining tablets, simply peel off the child resistant backer and push the tablet through the foil backer.

When collecting water from ponds, streams, etc., collect the water you wish to disinfect and let it set so the
suspended particles will settle to the bottom of the container.  Either filter the settled water or pour through several layers of absorbent cloth or coffee filters, to remove particulate.  Put the water in a clean container and add the appropriate amount of Redi Chlor (see dosage chart).  Allow 30 minutes contact time to adequately destroy the bacteria and virus.  Test the water with either test strips or a pool titration kit to make sure you have a minimum of .2 ppm free chlorine present in the water.  A .2 ppm free chlorine
residual is the minimum recommend by the EPA
to assure adequate distruction of bacteria and virus.  If test strips or a pool test kit are not an option, you can sniff the water for a slight odor of chlorine.  Most people can detect chlorine odor at somewhere between .2 and .5 ppm.  In any event, if you can not smell the chlorine, or
it does not test a minimum of .2 ppm, add more chlorine and retest in 15 to 30 minutes.  Several factors can affect the efficiency of the chlorine.  Water temperature below 72 degrees F. , organics in water, and turbidity can all cause the water to require more chlorine to achieve the desired free chlorine level.

If you are using a charcoal carbon filter, it is always advisable to disinfect the water prior to putting it through the charcoal carbon filter.  The reason for this is that bacteria and virus may penetrate the charcoal carbon filter beyond where the chlorine will penetrate, thus leaving bacterial and viral contamination in the filter to
recontaminate the water.  If there is any question as to whether your filter is contaminated, always disinfect the
filtered water.

The one-tenth gram tablet of Redi-Chlor treats one quart to two gallons of water.  50 tablets per package, each sealed in its own blister pack.

The one-quarter gram tablet of Redi-Chlor treats 5 gallons of water.  50 tablets per package, each sealed in its own blister pack.

Both the 1/10th and 1/4th gram tablet are individually sealed in a blister pack like above, 10 tablets per strip.  Each package contains five of these strips, for a total of 50 tablets.

Shelf Life

Redi Chlor tablets have been packaged to give maximum shelf life.  CTI puts a 2 year shelf life on the product.  Expiration date is stamped on the box.  It is recommended that the Redi Chlor be replaced with fresh tablets on or before the expiration date.  It is best not to expose the blister package to direct sunlight or high temperatures.  It is
better to keep these tablets in a cool dry place, and keep them in the box, except when carrying a package on your
person.

Time Required to Dissolve the Tablets

The tablets may take an hour or more, especially in cold water, to dissolve completely, however, the chlorine goes
out of the tablet into the water in just a few minutes.  Complete dissolving of the tablet is not necessary to get the benefit of the chlorine from it.

Other Products and Recommendations

We, at C.T.I., recommend using a good quality filtration device in conjunction with Redi Chlor.  A quality filter will remove protozoan parasites, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, etc. from the water, as well as most contaminants such as herbicides, pesticides, heavy metals, volatile organics and many more.  It will even remove excess chlorine.  A good filter can give you quality drinking water from almost any source water.  There are numerous filters marketed, ranging widely in price, that will remove a wide variety of contaminants with varying degrees of success.  You should be able to find one that will meet your needs and in a price range to suit you.  If you would like, you may contact C.T.I. with your questions or needs, and we will be happy to assist you in finding a filter that will best fit your particular needs.

At the present time, C.T.I. is doing extensive research and development on a tablet to clear turbid water.  This tablet could be placed in a container of murky water, and within approximately 5 to 10 minutes, would clear the water and drop the particulate out in the bottom of the container.  The tablet would also have some capabilities to flocculate out some of the contaminants as well.  We believe this would be a good companion product for the Redi Chlor water disinfection tablets.  It would reduce chlorine demand in murky water considerably, as well as clarifying the water to make it more palatable.  We would appreciate any feedback you may have on such a product.
